In a dedicated effort to improve community health, a recent outreach program organized by the Bloodless Surgery (BLSF) initiative was carried out at the Agona Abrim community in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipal District. The initiative was driven by the community’s need for specialized healthcare services, identified through comprehensive data collection and stakeholder engagement.
Recognizing the lack of specialized clinics in the district, BLS Foundation focused on critical health screenings, particularly eye health and blood pressure monitoring, to address pressing community issues.
A total of 367 community members underwent eye screening, with a significant number identified as needing further medical attention. Among those screened, 43 individuals have been booked for cataract surgeries, offering a new lease on sight for many. The screening revealed 49 suspected cases of glaucoma, highlighting the importance of ongoing eye health vigilance in the community.
Participants included 67 men and 211 women—a gender distribution reflecting the community’s engagement with health services. The initiative provided free medication and facilitated access to cataract surgeries to ensure affordability and accessibility.
In addition to eye health, blood pressure screenings were conducted on 420 individuals. Results indicated a high number of suspected hypertension cases, with 267 individuals flagged for potential blood pressure issues. Among these, 47 individuals were already aware of their hypertensive condition, while 12 were referred for further medical management.
This impactful outreach demonstrates the community's need for accessible health services and the importance of targeted interventions. By engaging local stakeholders and leveraging community data, BLS aims to continue providing essential health screenings and surgeries to underserved areas like Agona Abrim.
The success of this program underscores the ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes in the KEEA district fostering healthier, more informed communities for a brighter future.
